About this Destination

Kibale is one of Uganda's best-known places for guided chimpanzee tracking. Its rainforest supports other primates too, including red colobus, red-tailed monkeys and grey-cheeked mangabeys. Every walk depends on where the animals move and the conditions in the forest that day.

The experience begins before a chimp comes into view: calls from the canopy, movement in the undergrowth and a guide reading the forest around you. Rangers lead visitors in search of a habituated community and set the viewing approach according to park rules and the animals' behaviour.

Kibale fits naturally into a western Uganda journey alongside Queen Elizabeth National Park and Bwindi. Each stop offers a different habitat and a different way to experience the region's wildlife.

What to Do

Experiences in Kibale Forest

Chimpanzee Tracking

Join a ranger-led walk from Kanyanchu to look for a habituated chimpanzee community. Walking time and sightings vary with the animals' movements and the day's conditions. Follow your guide's viewing instructions throughout.

Chimpanzee Habituation Experience

Ask about the longer chimpanzee habituation experience if you would like more time in the forest. Confirm current permits, scheduling and walking conditions for your dates before making plans.

Bigodi Wetland Walk

Visit nearby Bigodi with a local guide to explore papyrus and forest-edge habitat. The wetland is known for birds and primates, though particular sightings depend on conditions.

Night Walk

Ask whether guided night walks are operating for your dates. A visit after dark offers a different perspective on forest sounds and nocturnal wildlife, with sightings never guaranteed.

Nearby Crater Lakes

The Fort Portal region has crater lakes that can offer a quieter contrast to a forest day. Ask about locally guided walks and access arrangements if you would like to add a lake stop.

Before You Go

Practical information

Chimpanzee tracking and habituation visits require their own park arrangements. Confirm current permits, rates, schedules and walking conditions for your dates. Kibale is near Fort Portal and can be combined with Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi in a tailored western Uganda itinerary.
