Why Bwindi

An ancient forest. A living conservation story.

Bwindi lies on the Albertine Rift, where lower forest meets high montane habitat in a landscape of remarkable biological diversity. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for the importance of the forest and the life it holds.

Mountain gorillas are its best-known residents, but they are not the whole story. The scale of the forest, the birdlife, the plants and the people living around its edge all change the meaning of the journey.

Getting to Bwindi

The road is part of the geography.

Kihihi serves the northern side and Buhoma access. Kisoro is used for southern sectors such as Nkuringo and Rushaga. Many approaches are best handled in a 4WD vehicle.

When to go

Rainforest, all year. Different textures each month.

UWA guidance broadly identifies drier primate-tracking periods around June–August and December–February. Bwindi remains a rainforest; conditions can change at any time.

More than the encounter

Why this forest survived.

Bwindi’s ancient forest history is inseparable from the Albertine Rift, one of Africa’s most important regions for biodiversity. National park protection and UNESCO recognition created a framework for conservation, research and careful visitor access.

Gorilla conservation now sits alongside scientific monitoring and relationships with communities around the forest edge. The story is not finished, and it should not be reduced to a single population number or a single encounter.
