Nkuringo, the dramatic ridge
Nkuringo is the highest sector on Bwindi's southern ridge, and the most cinematic. From its trails the forest falls away toward the Virunga volcanoes, the light moves in long golden bars through the canopy, and the gorilla encounters carry a sense of theatre the gentler sectors cannot match. It asks more of your legs, and rewards them with the finest scenery in the park.

Why trek in Nkuringo
Nkuringo's appeal is scenery, light and solitude. The ridge brings panoramic views across to the volcanoes, the high position delivers the best photographic light in Bwindi, and the sector sees less foot traffic than Buhoma or Rushaga. It also pairs beautifully with a Lake Mutanda canoe, turning a gorilla trek into a wider southern journey.

If photography is your priority and you only want a single trek, Nkuringo is the strongest choice. The high ridge angles the morning light through the trees, the Virunga backdrop adds depth, and the quieter trails mean your hour is less hurried. Photographers who want longer in the field should also consider the Rushaga habituation experience.
The gorilla families of Nkuringo
Nkuringo tracks around 4 habituated families, fewer than Rushaga or Buhoma, which is part of why its trails feel so quiet. Your permit names one family for one day, and the smaller numbers here make for an intimate, unhurried encounter.

Nkuringo permits and prices
A Nkuringo trek is the standard one-hour visit, because habituation is offered only in Rushaga. The permit is USD 800 per person for foreign non-residents, issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority for a specific family and date.

How to reach Nkuringo
Nkuringo is in the south of Bwindi, near Kisoro and Lake Mutanda. Most guests drive from Entebbe or fly to the Kisoro airstrip and transfer by road. Its southern position makes it easy to combine with a Lake Mutanda canoe and with golden monkey tracking in Mgahinga.
Terrain and fitness in Nkuringo
Nkuringo sits at roughly 1,900 to 2,300 metres, and its trails often descend steeply into the valley before climbing back, so it ranks among the more strenuous sectors. Good fitness is genuinely important here. Prepare in the months before you travel, and take a porter on the day.
