Ruhija, the birding sector

Ruhija is Bwindi's eastern, high-altitude sector, and the one birders cross continents for. It is cooler, quieter and higher than the rest of the park, and at its heart lies Mubwindi Swamp, one of the most reliable sites on Earth for the African Green Broadbill. 6 habituated gorilla families share these trails, which makes Ruhija the natural choice for travellers who want gorillas and birds in a single sector.

This page focuses on trekking in Ruhija specifically. For the wider planning picture, permits, seasons, fitness and cost, start with our complete Uganda gorilla tours guide.

From Bwindi House Gorilla Safaris
Ruhija is where we send guests who care as much about the Albertine Rift endemics as the gorillas. It is the only sector where the two passions overlap so completely.
The case for Ruhija

Why trek in Ruhija

Ruhija's appeal is its dual identity. It is a proper gorilla sector with 6 habituated families, and it is also the birding capital of Bwindi, with Mubwindi Swamp drawing serious birders for the African Green Broadbill and Grauer's Rush Warbler. The high altitude brings cooler trekking conditions and less foot traffic than the busier sectors, and Ruhija pairs naturally with the Kibale primate route.

Mubwindi Swamp and the birding sector

The trek to Mubwindi Swamp is a birding pilgrimage. It is among the most dependable places anywhere to see the African Green Broadbill, and the surrounding high forest holds a roll call of Albertine Rift endemics. For a traveller who wants to combine a once-in-a-lifetime gorilla encounter with genuinely world-class birding, no other Bwindi sector comes close.

Plan the timing around both passions with our best time to visit Bwindi guide.

Who you meet

The gorilla families of Ruhija

Ruhija tracks around 6 habituated families on its high eastern trails. Your permit names one family for one day, and because the sector is quieter than Buhoma or Rushaga, the encounter often feels especially private.

The foundation

Ruhija permits and prices

A Ruhija trek is the standard one-hour visit, because habituation is offered only in Rushaga. The permit is USD 800 per person for foreign non-residents, issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority for a specific family and date.

Getting there

How to reach Ruhija

Ruhija sits in the east of Bwindi, on the high road that links Buhoma in the north with the southern sectors. Most guests drive from Entebbe, and the eastern position makes Ruhija a natural pairing with the Kibale chimpanzee forests for a combined primate and birding journey.

Be ready

Terrain and fitness in Ruhija

Ruhija is the highest sector, at roughly 2,200 to 2,500 metres, so the air is thinner and the conditions cooler, but the trekking itself is generally moderate. The walk to Mubwindi Swamp is longer, so birders should be prepared for a full day. Reasonable fitness helps, and a porter is available.

Prepare with our fitness and trekking guide and Bwindi packing list.

The base

Where to stay for Ruhija

A Ruhija trek means a Ruhija-side lodge, keeping the high-altitude trailheads and Mubwindi Swamp within easy reach. See the wider picture on our Ruhija trekking guide.

The other sectors

Ruhija compared with the rest of Bwindi

Ruhija is the high, cool, birding sector. Buhoma, Rushaga and Nkuringo offer the gentler classic trek, the habituation experience and the dramatic photographic ridge respectively.

Compare all four in our Bwindi sectors guide, or return to the Uganda gorilla tours hub.

Questions travellers ask us

Ruhija is Bwindi's eastern, high-altitude sector and the centre of the park's birding map. Mubwindi Swamp is one of the most reliable places on Earth for the African Green Broadbill and Grauer's Rush Warbler, and six habituated gorilla families share the cooler, quieter trails with the birders.
Yes, Ruhija is the best Bwindi sector for combining gorilla trekking with serious birding. The trek to Mubwindi Swamp is a birding pilgrimage for Albertine Rift endemics, and the sector's altitude and habitat make it the natural choice for travellers who care about both gorillas and birds.
The standard trekking permit is USD 800 per person for foreign non-residents, the same across all Bwindi sectors. The habituation experience is not offered in Ruhija, only in Rushaga, so a Ruhija trek is the standard one-hour visit with a fully habituated family.
Ruhija sits in the east of Bwindi, on the high road between Buhoma and the southern sectors. Most guests drive from Entebbe, and the sector pairs naturally with the Kibale primate route for a journey that links chimpanzees, birds and gorillas.
Yes. Ruhija sees less foot traffic than Buhoma or Rushaga, partly because of its high altitude and birding focus. For travellers who want a cooler, quieter trek away from the busiest trailheads, it is an excellent choice.
